I first sought help 3 years ago when I became afraid of what was happening to me. Things had been spiraling and I did not know where to turn. Unfortunately, due to my geographical instability, I had to wait 3 months before receiving any help. During this time, things hit rock bottom and I was in significant physical danger from my eating disorder. I received a few months of therapy, but had to cut it shorter than would have been preferable due another change of location for me. I then tried going alone, but from my initial help, knew the warning signs to watch out for, which I was then able to spot and seek help before I reached a dangerous level. I was supremely lucky to have prompt access to treatment at this time via the FREED initiative.
"I have been amazed at the non-judgmental, accepting, understanding and caring approach of every person I have come across during my problems. "
My therapy with FREED taught me to pay attention to, understand and question the harmful thoughts in my head, and notice how these lead to destructive behaviours in the form of my eating disorder. I was taught to consider my long-term goals in life, and then given tools to help me attempt to align my short-term behaviours with these goals. This was incredibly helpful, as no one wants to be unhappy, unhealthy or alone, but the thoughts in my head were telling me I deserved to be all of these things, and were perpetuating actions which lead me towards those negative experiences. By considering the factual basis for my critical thoughts, the alternative perspectives, and whether I will take positive, constructive actions or continue damaging myself, I managed to make more of the opportunities I had in my life, and think less in my eating disorder mindset.
This is by no means a finished product, but rather a constant battle, that one hopes will become easier over time.
I would encourage anyone who is concerned, or wants help, to just ask. I have been amazed at the non-judgmental, accepting, understanding and caring approach of every person I have come across during my problems. I owe them a significant debt, and will be un-endingly grateful.
