Phoebe received treatment through FREED in London. She shares her experiences of her eating disorder, treatment and recovery.
I got help for my eating disorder after talking to my GP during a check-up for something else and mentioning that I had been making myself sick sometimes. He recommended I use the self-referral service.
When I went to my first assessment appointment at the eating disorder service, it made me feel like my problem was real and needed addressing – but in a proactive way. I think if I hadn’t got treatment when I did, I would have continued losing weight and feeling as if there were no solutions for what I was experiencing.

"5 days of endurance cycling would not have been possible for me this time last year and I was proud to be able to fuel properly and be strong!"
I found therapy really positive. It gave the right level of support for me and provided a comfortable progression through goals and issues to discuss. Talking to other people about what I was doing really helped - having support from people checking on my progress. Also, the food diary and weigh in structure to the sessions helped to give measurable goals and progress.
Things are so much better now. I am aware of triggering behaviours and feelings and better at identifying actions to resolve them.
There is no one easy or simple route to recovering but there are easy and simple things you can do to start that and get to a position where you want to make bigger changes. When you can develop that mindset for yourself, you know you will always have that capability.
